Our Plans vs. God’s Plans

As an American, I learned something new about our neighbors north of the border: they celebrate Canada Day on July 1. It’s their version of July 4th for us, and it’s a national holiday. And we just happened to be in Canada on that day.

However, we did not anticipate that all the grocery stores would be closed. Walmart was even closed. In fact, we struck out three times, attempting to buy food for our visit. All the while, the kids in the car are getting more and more hungry.

As things in the car were approaching a boiling point, we turned to scripture. Proverbs 16:1-3 says, “The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit. Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

In short, I wanted my family to realize that, sometimes we make plans, and they don’t always work out. In fact, God had other plans for us that day. The Proverb goes on in verse 9, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

This blog is supposed to be focused on light, but these verses were “enlightening” for us in this situation. And, whether it’s just plans for the day, or plans for your life, we can be comforted in the fact that “The Lord establishes his steps. That’s what it means to be a follower of Jesus–to walk in His steps, to go where He leads.
